Read this before calling. Grinding, banging, squeaking, rattling, popping. Five sounds, five components, five different urgency levels. This is the same framework our crew uses on a service call.
That sound is almost always a torsion spring snapping. The torsion spring is the large coiled spring mounted horizontally above the door, and it stores enough mechanical energy to lift hundreds of pounds. When it fails the release is sudden and loud, like a firecracker going off inside the garage.
After a snap the door becomes extremely heavy with no counterbalance. The opener will either struggle badly or refuse to move it at all. Forcing it risks damaging the opener motor, bending panels, or creating a genuine safety situation.

Noise almost always gets worse before it becomes a visible problem. Metal contracts in sub-zero temperatures, and roller bearings that were borderline in October are seized by February. Torsion coils lose even tension after years of freeze-thaw, and that uneven tension is one of the most common noise producers across the service area.

Three zones, three familiesTravel cycle
A sound at startup points somewhere different from a sound mid-travel or right at close. That is where the diagnosis starts, and it is why the first question on a noise call is always when rather than what.
Startup sounds trace back to springs and opener components. Mid-travel sounds trace to rollers, tracks and cables. Sounds at the closing point often involve limit switches or the bottom seal dragging on an uneven floor.
Where more than one component may be involved, full system diagnostics runs the whole sequence so nothing gets missed.

A single sharp impact. Sometimes one loud pop, sometimes a crack, usually at the start of travel or at one specific point in the cycle.
What causes itMost commonly a snapped torsion spring. Also possible: a cable drum slipping on the winding shaft, or a panel section striking a dislodged track bracket.

A sustained, rough mechanical drag. Not a single event but continuous friction lasting through part of the travel.

Grinding means parts are dragging instead of rolling, and left alone it accelerates wear on several components at once.
A rhythmic clicking or popping mid-travel. Not a single bang but a repeating pattern as the door moves.
What causes itCables jumping slightly on the drum grooves, coils that have lost even tension and release unevenly, or rollers skipping a bent section of track. The repeating rhythm is the identifier.
A high-pitched continuous squeal during movement, usually at hinge pivot points or where the roller lip meets the inside edge of the track.
What causes itMetal on metal without lubrication. Higher and thinner than grinding. It wants a silicone or lithium spray rated for door components, not WD-40, which evaporates too fast.
A recurring metallic clatter or vibration during movement, intermittent, often worse at certain speeds or in one direction.
What causes itLoose lag bolts on the track brackets, a bracket pulling away from the wall, or a chain drive with enough slack to slap the rail. Lowest urgency, but hardware that stays loose eventually fails. Schedule within a few weeks.

Where in the cycle told me exactly where to look.
When I pull up for a noise call my first step is always the same. I ask the homeowner to run the door while I stand to the side and watch it move. I am not just listening; I am clocking where in the cycle the noise appears.
A homeowner in Menomonee Falls described a clunking thud every time the door opened, but not when it closed. That detail mattered. A noise that only shows up in one direction almost always points to a spring or cable system working harder on one side than the other.
I ran the door once. The sound came right at the start of the upward travel: a single dull impact, then nothing. That pattern is a cable drum, the cylindrical spool the lift cable wraps around, that has slipped partly off the winding shaft. It was catching on its own housing at the start of every lift.
If she had described it as a clunk somewhere in the middle, I would have checked the track and rollers first. That is the whole framework: match the sound to the cycle position, then match that to the component.
Four variables, and the first one is entirely within your control.
A squeaking hinge addressed at week two takes three minutes and a spray can. The same hinge ignored for eight months may have worn through its pivot pin and need replacing.
Startup, mid-travel or close. The position narrows the field before anyone touches the door, which is why it is worth noting before you call.
A rattle that stays a rattle is a loose bolt. A rattle that becomes a grind means the loose part is now contacting something moving. Character change is an escalation signal.
A twelve-year-old door that has never been serviced will have several components near end of life at once, so addressing the noise often reveals more than one part is due.
