A panel section, one horizontal segment of a sectional door, does more than fill space. It carries load, maintains the seal and keeps the door traveling straight on its track. One backed-in door taught me to always check the panel above the dent first.
A homeowner in an older neighborhood off Bluemound Road backed out about six inches too wide and caught the lower-left section. The dent looked about the size of a dinner plate. Nothing catastrophic from the outside.
I ran my hand along the hinge line connecting that section to the one above it. There was a gap, maybe an eighth of an inch, that should not have been there. The impact had rotated the lower panel just enough to put tension on the hinge barrel, and the roller on that corner was already starting to bind in the track. Another week of operating the door and that roller would have worn a groove into the track wall, which turns into track damage well beyond the original panel.
We replaced the damaged section, realigned the hinges and checked cable tension on both sides. The panel above needed a hinge swap; the barrel had micro-cracked from the rotational stress. About ninety minutes on site.
That is what panel-to-track load transfer looks like in practice. The dent was real. The hinge above it was the actual problem.
