What a travel reversal actually isSide view

Your door will not close. Here is what is happening

You press the button. The door moves down two feet, maybe three, then stops and goes right back up. The opener sounds fine, the remote light blinks, nothing looks broken.

That is a travel reversal: the opener reversing the door's direction before it reaches the floor. It is built into every modern opener as a safety mechanism, so when it triggers on its own, something is telling the system to stop.

In Milwaukee that something traces back to one of four causes. Each looks identical from the outside. Each needs a completely different fix. The diagnostic confirms which one is active before a single component is touched.

Four causes, one symptom

Homeowners usually think it is the sensors, and sometimes it is. Just as often it is not. Walking through each cause in sequence is the only way to avoid fixing the wrong thing.

Cause 1

Photo eye sensor misalignment

What you see: the door reverses immediately after starting down. It may not travel two feet.

The photo eyes are a pair of infrared sensors mounted near the bottom of each track, four to six inches off the ground. One sends a beam, the other receives it. Break that beam, or point the two units a fraction of an inch off each other, and the opener reads an obstruction and reverses.

Each unit has an indicator LED. A solid light on both means alignment; a blinking light on either means the beam is broken or off axis. Wind, a nudge from a vehicle or shifting hardware is enough. Both LEDs get checked first on arrival, then the sensor is aligned, the beam confirmed steady, and the close cycle tested. For persistent problems, sensor alignment and safety inspection covers the whole beam path.

Cause 2

Limit switch miscalibration

What you see: the door travels most of the way down, then reverses just before it touches the floor. Or it stops at the same point every time.

The limit switch is a setting inside the opener that tells the motor how far the door has to travel to count as fully closed. Set too short, the opener believes the door has already landed, so when the door actually meets the floor it reads that resistance as an obstruction and reverses.

Drift happens after a power surge, after a battery change on some opener models, or just from years of use. Adjusting it takes a screwdriver and a test cycle, but only after confirming this is the cause, because the same symptom from a different source will not respond to a limit switch adjustment at all.

Cause 3

Spring tension imbalance

What you see: the door goes about halfway down, slows noticeably, then reverses. The opener may sound like it is working harder than usual.

When a spring loses tension or partially fails, the door becomes heavier than the opener was set up to handle. The opener's overload protection stops the motor when it detects too much resistance, and reverses the door before it reaches the floor.

We test it by disconnecting the opener and lifting the door by hand to about waist height. A properly balanced door stays where you put it. A door that drops or shoots up has uneven tension, which confirms the spring system rather than the opener. Turning up the opener's force setting will not solve this; the spring gets addressed directly. Where the opener really is at fault, opener repair handles the unit itself.

Cause 4

Track obstruction or deformation

What you see: the door stops at the same point every time, whichever button or remote you use.

If the door halts at a consistent spot, something is physically stopping it there: ice or compacted debris near the track base, a bent section of track, or a roller binding against a misaligned one. Milwaukee winters put real stress on track hardware, with freeze-thaw expansion working on both the concrete floor and the steel mounting brackets.

We have traced closing problems in Brookfield and West Allis to a single bent bracket throwing the roller path by less than a quarter inch. That is enough to lock a door in mid-travel. If the door has already left the channel, start with off-track repair.

Why this shows up more in a Milwaukee winter
