A bent-looking track sometimes hides a crimp that causes failure within months.
The homeowner called because the door was stuttering about two-thirds of the way up. It would stutter, stop, then reverse. From the driveway the track looked fine: no obvious bend, no visible gap. The opener's safety sensor was getting the blame.
I got up close and ran my hand along the full vertical section. About eighteen inches from the curve there was a rail crimp, a localised deformation in the track channel, small enough to miss visually but deep enough to create a high-friction point. Every time the roller hit that spot the motor load spiked and the safety circuit reversed the door.
The location of a crimp matters as much as its size. A crimp near the curve puts far more stress on the door than the same crimp low on the vertical section. This one was near the curve.
I also found the upper anchor bracket had pulled away from the framing by about a quarter inch. The anchor was the root cause and the crimp was the result, because the rail had been flexing under load without the anchor holding it rigid. We replaced that section, re-secured the anchor into solid framing with longer lag screws, and confirmed the track gauge matched the roller diameter, since a gauge mismatch causes binding and accelerated roller wear. The door ran clean on the first test cycle and has not come back.
You cannot tell from the outside of the track. It comes down to the inside of the rail channel and the condition of the anchor points, which is why the decision happens after a physical inspection rather than a visual read from the floor.
