A roller is a wheel-and-stem assembly that sits in the track and lets each panel travel with minimal friction. When one wears, you hear it before you see it.

Why steel rollers fail hereBearing race
Steel rollers have an internal cavity called the bearing race, the space inside the wheel where the ball bearings spin. Through Milwaukee's wet springs and early winters that cavity collects moisture, and it does not fully dry between cycles. It sits there, oxidises the internal surfaces and turns smooth-running bearings into a friction-heavy grind.
Then the temperature drops. The moisture expands, the race tightens, and the roller stops spinning cleanly.

A heavy insulated double-car door running eight or more cycles a day needs a sealed, high-cycle nylon unit. A light door opening twice a day may run perfectly well on a quality steel replacement. Rough-running steel eventually scores the inner track surface, which can turn into track alignment work if it goes unaddressed long enough.

Not every noisy roller is worn out. Sometimes the stem is the actual problem.
A homeowner in Brookfield called about a squeaking door. She said it started slowly and got louder over about three months, which is textbook worn rollers.
I pulled the bottom panel and checked the roller on the hinge side first. The wheel looked fine: no visible corrosion, no obvious flat spots. Then I checked the roller stem, the fixed shaft that inserts into the door's hinge bracket. The stem had worked loose from the hinge, and the bracket hole was slightly elongated from vibration over years of use.
In that situation the wheel is not the problem. The stem is rocking inside a worn bracket, which creates the noise and puts uneven load on the wheel. Swapping the roller without addressing the bracket would have had the new one squeaking again within a few months.

We run the door by hand with the opener disconnected, which isolates roller drag from opener resistance. Each panel is inspected individually, roller stems are pulled and measured, hinge brackets are checked for elongation or cracking, and the track interior is examined under light for scoring lines left by the previous rollers.
Old rollers come out panel by panel. Replacements are confirmed for stem length and wheel diameter before they go in. Nylon rollers are fitted with the sealed bearing face oriented toward the track edge for correct load distribution, and stem ends are seated fully in the hinge brackets before any fastener is tightened. Any bracket showing elongation at the stem hole is replaced.
The door runs five complete cycles with the opener reconnected while we listen at each roller position. Balance is checked: a correctly balanced door holds position when stopped mid-travel without the opener holding it, and if it drifts we flag that separately as a spring issue. Travel speed is confirmed against the opener settings and you get a verbal summary before we go.
