Photo eye sensors are the pair of infrared safety devices mounted near the floor on each side of the opening. One sends a beam, the other receives it. When that beam breaks or drifts, the opener's auto-reverse activates: the door stops, or it will not close at all.
We read the opener's onboard diagnostic blink code first. That pattern tells the technician whether the problem is misalignment, a wiring fault or an obstruction before anyone touches a bracket, which saves fixing the wrong thing.

Why a green light is not proofBeam path
Sensor brackets sit at ankle height, bolted to the door track or the wall framing, and both can shift when the slab beneath them moves. The sensors themselves look perfectly fine, and the green indicator may stay on, but the beam path has drifted a fraction of an inch and the opener's tolerance is tight.
Frost drives well below the slab line here, and that expansion and contraction repeats for decades in older neighbourhoods through Brown Deer, West Allis and Brookfield. The result is gradual floor and frame drift: subtle enough that nothing looks wrong, significant enough to cause a door that reverses for no visible reason.

A steady green light does not always mean a clean beam.
A customer in New Berlin called because the door kept reversing about three feet off the ground. When I pulled up, both sensor lights were solid green. No blinking, no obvious obstruction, and a quick look at the brackets showed them pointed roughly at each other.
So I pulled the diagnostic blink code off the motor unit. On that model, the sequence I got indicates intermittent beam loss: not a full misalignment, a marginal one. The beam was connecting just enough to hold the light green at rest, and the door's vibration during operation was breaking the signal for about half a second. That was enough to trigger the auto-reverse.
The real issue was the receiving sensor's bracket, slightly bent from some earlier minor impact. It looked straight. Under operation, vibration was pushing it out of tolerance.
I replaced the bracket mount, re-aimed both sensors using the beam-path test rather than visual alignment, and ran an auto-reverse test with a length of timber on the floor. Door closed clean. Then I documented the whole inspection and left the homeowner a copy. Where the fault turns out to sit in the opener itself, that is opener repair.
This is the most common misconception on these calls. A blinking light on the sensor or the motor unit signals something in the beam path. It rarely means the sensor itself has died.
The code gets read before any part is ordered. If alignment and a lens wipe clear it, the job is done.
