If your extension springs have no safety cables, do not use the door
An extension spring stores energy by stretching, and when one breaks under tension the pieces travel. The safety cable threaded through the centre is what contains them. Older Milwaukee garages, particularly those built before the mid-1970s, frequently have systems that were installed without cables or where the cables were removed during a past repair. If you look along the tracks and see springs with nothing running through them, keep the door closed and call.
How an extension system carries the door
Extension springs stretch rather than twist. They mount along the horizontal tracks on either side of the door, parallel to the ceiling, and pull through a pulley and cable arrangement as the door moves. If you are not sure which system you have, start at spring repair.
The springs
One along each horizontal track. As the door closes they extend and store energy; as it opens they contract and give that energy back. Independent of each other, which is why they must be matched.
Pulleys and cables
The spring's pull is redirected through a pulley at each end and down a lift cable to the bottom bracket. Worn pulleys bind and put the load back onto the spring.
Safety cables
A steel cable threaded through the centre of each spring, anchored at both ends. Containment, not counterbalance.
Where extension systems are still the right answer
Low-headroom garages, common in Milwaukee's older housing stock, often cannot take a torsion shaft above the opening. In those garages an extension system is not a compromise; it is the configuration that fits. A well-maintained extension system with intact safety cables runs reliably for years.

Springs are rated by the weight range they carry. Both sides get the same rating, chosen from the door's measured weight rather than its size.

Wisconsin winters make containment matter more
Spring steel becomes more brittle as temperature drops, and Milwaukee garages swing hard between overnight cold and daytime thaw. That is when a spring already near the end of its cycle life is most likely to let go.

We also inspect the anchor points at both ends, because a cable that is threaded but not properly anchored does nothing at the moment it is needed.

What I check first on an extension system
Before I look at the broken spring, I look for the cables.
A Bay View homeowner called about one broken spring on a single-car detached garage, 1950s construction, the kind with barely any space above the opening. Standard extension setup, and no safety cables on either side. They had either never been installed or been taken off during an old repair.
The spring that broke had let go somewhere in the middle of its stretch. Nobody was in the garage at the time. That is luck, and I do not like relying on it.
I replaced both springs, because the surviving one had carried identical load through identical cycles and was inside the same wear window. Then I threaded and anchored safety cables through both. The homeowner asked about converting to torsion; I measured the headroom and told him it would not fit. An extension system that is properly cabled and correctly matched is the right answer for that garage, not a downgrade.
Pulleys and lift cables got checked in the same visit, since a binding pulley loads the spring harder every cycle. Then a balance test at mid-height before I left. See cable repair for the lift cable side of that work.

Yes. Both springs have carried the same load through the same number of cycles, so a surviving spring is usually near the end of its life too. Replacing one leaves the door pulling unevenly, which drags on the track and wears the new spring faster. Both go, matched to the same weight class.
Because an extension spring under tension is dangerous when it fails. The safety cable is a steel cable threaded through the centre of the spring and anchored at both ends, so if the spring breaks the cable contains the pieces instead of letting them whip across the garage.
