Header clearance is the vertical space between the top of the door opening and the ceiling, and it decides which rail configurations physically fit.

Many Milwaukee bungalows and postwar homes were built with eight-foot ceilings and tight garage entries, while a standard opener rail assumes ten or more inches above the door. That gap often does not exist here.

What I found before the box was even opened

The rail was six inches too long for the garage it was bought for.

A homeowner in West Allis had ordered a belt drive opener online and had the box waiting when I arrived. First thing I did was measure. Header clearance was eight and a quarter inches, and the opener's standard rail assumed ten.

The unit would not have reached full open. The door's top panel would have caught on the rail bracket before clearing the opening.

We did not open the box. I called the supplier, confirmed a low-clearance rail was available for that model, and got it ordered. The customer got the belt drive opener they wanted, with the right hardware for their actual garage.

Rail length is specced by the manufacturer for a generic garage, and your garage is not generic. Header clearance in a 1952 bungalow is not the same as a 2018 two-car in New Berlin, and treating them the same is how you end up with an opener that binds on install day.

How the installation goes

    Measure before anything is selected

    Header clearance, ceiling height, door weight and the existing bracket positions all get documented. If you have already bought an opener, compatibility is confirmed before any packaging is opened, which is the step that keeps a mismatch from becoming a mid-install problem.

  2. The work

    Motor, rail, wiring and programming

    The motor head mounts to the ceiling and the rail and trolley assembly connects it to the door bracket. Wiring runs from the motor to the wall control and down to the safety sensors at floor level. Force limits and travel limits are set so the door stops precisely at open and closed. Smart units are connected to Wi-Fi and app-paired in this phase.

  3. Before we pack up

    Every function confirmed

    A full cycle: open, close, manual release, and an auto-reverse test with the sensor beam interrupted. Remotes and any keypad are programmed on site, and we walk you through the wall control and app features before leaving. Nothing is called done until every function is confirmed working.

Not every opener problem needs a new opener

If your current unit is acting up but the opener itself is relatively new, or the fault is isolated to the wiring, the sensors or the circuit board, replacing the whole thing is the expensive answer to a smaller question.
