Balance is the condition where the spring system carries the door's full weight independently. When the springs are calibrated correctly the door stays put at any mid-travel position without help from the opener.
The motor guides the door. It does not carry it. Everything else in the system depends on that being true, which is why spring repair and balance are the same conversation.
Most people have never seen a disconnect test done. A technician disengages the opener, lifts the door by hand to mid-travel and lets go. A properly balanced door holds. One that does not tells you exactly what is wrong before any adjustment is made.

Steel contracts in the cold, so a torsion system calibrated in October behaves differently in January. A door that tested balanced in autumn can drift noticeably by February.
The pattern turns up across the metro every late winter. The opener strains, the door feels heavy, the motor runs longer than it should, and the homeowner assumes the opener is failing. Often it is a balance issue that started with a cold snap and got worse with every cycle.
A balance test booked in late winter or early spring catches tension loss before it shortens the opener's life. Where the opener genuinely is the fault, that is opener repair.
The drift result is recorded before any adjustment, because it decides the direction of the correction. Adjusting without it risks pushing the tension further the wrong way.

Before I touch a spring.
The first time I explain the disconnect test to someone, they are usually surprised it exists. I disengage the door from the opener carriage by hand, lift it to about waist height, roughly mid-travel, and let go. What happens next tells me everything.
I record that drift result before making any adjustment. Then I calibrate in measured increments, quarter-turn adjustments on torsion systems and repositioned hook placement on extension systems, and I retest between each step. Not once at the end. Every step.
Here is why that matters: a single-pass adjustment is a guess. Incremental adjustment with retesting is a calibration. On a heavy double-car door, the difference between close enough and correctly balanced can put tens of extra pounds of load on the opener motor on every single cycle. Over years, that comes off the motor's life.
The unbalanced door people think is an opener problem is often just spring calibration. The disconnect test is what shows which one it is.
The question comes up on most calls, and the answer comes from the test rather than from a preference.
If the springs have usable life and the tension is simply off, we calibrate. If a spring is worn, shows visible fatigue, or cannot hold an adjustment through a full retest cycle, you hear that directly.
No extra work gets added without a clear reason, and you will know what was found and why any further step is being recommended. Where replacement is the answer, that is spring replacement.

We start with the disconnect test: door disengaged from the opener, raised to mid-travel by hand, released. We record whether it rises, drops or holds. The springs are checked visually for wear, the cables for fraying and the drums for even winding at the same time.
In measured increments. On torsion systems that means quarter-turn adjustments at the winding cone, tracked and counted; on extension systems the safety hook is repositioned to increase or decrease stretch. Each adjustment is followed by a retest. Tension work follows DASMA practice for spring loading and counterbalance.
After the final adjustment the opener goes back on and the door runs three full cycles. We verify the opener motor load has come down, check the auto-reverse function, and confirm the door holds at mid-travel. If you need it in writing, a documented safety inspection can be added to the same visit. Only then is the call complete.

Most take forty-five to ninety minutes from arrival to confirmation. We disconnect the door from the opener, raise it to mid-travel by hand and record the drift. Spring tension is then adjusted in measured increments with a retest between each step, and the visit ends only once the door holds mid-travel and the opener load has been verified.
Adjusting without it is guesswork. The test shows exactly how far the door drifts and in which direction before anything is changed, which is what tells us whether the springs are over-tensioned, under-tensioned or already in range. Without that reading you risk correcting in the wrong direction.
A strained opener still runs while carrying far more load than it was built for, and that wears the motor quietly over hundreds of cycles. The door feeling fine is not the same as the spring system being calibrated correctly, which is exactly what the disconnect test separates.
We fix what the disconnect test confirms. If the springs are adjustable and hold tension through the retest cycle, we calibrate and stop there. If a spring shows visible fatigue or will not hold an adjustment, you hear that directly with the reason. Nothing gets added without a specific finding from the diagnostic.
