Home/Services/Spring repair

Garage door spring repair in Milwaukee

Torsion and extension systems, with every replacement sized to the door's measured weight rather than a catalogue guess. Both spring types ride on the truck.

Call (248) 982-5399 Describe what happened
Gloved hands holding two steel winding bars inserted into the winding cone of a torsion spring mounted above a garage door header, lit by overhead garage lighting
  • Door weighed on site before a spring is chosen
  • Torsion and extension stock on the vehicle
  • Whole counterbalance system tested, not just the swap
  • Owner-operated by Nehoray Karadi

If a spring has already snapped, do not operate the door

Without a working counterbalance the door's full weight goes straight to the lifting hardware and to whoever is holding it, and a standard residential door weighs a few hundred pounds. Leave the door where it is, keep the opener off, and call. A fully wound torsion spring also stores enough energy to injure someone if it is released without the right bars and clamps, which is why this is not a solo job. That is physics, not alarm.

Two systems, two repairs

Spring repair covers two distinct systems, and the first thing we do on arrival is identify which one is on your door. Each needs a different approach and different safety handling.

A torsion system: one wound coil on a shaft above the opening, with cable drums at each end feeding cables down to the bottom brackets One coil above the opening Cable drums at each end feed the lift cables down

Torsion

  • Wound steel coil mounted horizontally above the opening
  • Carries the whole counterbalance load in one component
  • Fails with a loud snap, often described as a gunshot
  • Wound with calibrated bars and shaft clamps, never improvised tools

See torsion spring systems, or a snapped spring if it has already gone.

An extension system: a stretched coil running along each horizontal track, with a safety cable threaded through each spring to catch it if it snaps One coil along each track Dashed: safety cable through each spring

Extension

  • Stretched coils running along each horizontal track
  • Splits the load between two springs, one per side
  • Quieter failure than torsion, but still sudden
  • Safety cables catch the spring if it snaps mid-coil

See extension spring systems, with safety cable inspection included.

A matched replacement, not a guess

A spring is chosen from four numbers, and three of them come off your door rather than a catalogue. Get the sizing wrong and the spring wears out ahead of schedule. Get it right and it lasts its full rated life. See matched spring replacement for the replacement side of the work.

Weighed

The door itself

Weighed panel by panel with a hanging scale when the manufacturer's label does not give it. Most companies pull a spring on a visual guess; the weight is the number everything else follows from.

Wire and inside diameter

The existing spring's wire gauge and inside diameter are read before a replacement is selected, along with the coil length.

Door height

Determines how far the spring has to unwind on every cycle, which changes the coil length needed.

Cycle-life rating

The number of open-and-close cycles a spring is built to complete. It matters more than most homeowners expect.

  • A standard residential door runs about four cycles a day
  • That is roughly 1,460 cycles a year
  • A 10,000-cycle spring is about six to seven years here

Nehoray tells customers that number so they can plan, not so they worry. A higher cycle rating costs more up front and buys years at the other end.

A spring coil through a Wisconsin winter: each swing between hard cold and above-freezing warmth makes the steel contract and expand, and that repeated movement drives metal fatigue on top of the daily load cycles Single digits overnight Above freezing by midday Steel expands On top of that: the daily load cycles About four open-and-close cycles a day, every day, all winter.

What a Milwaukee winter does to spring steelMetal fatigue

Freeze-thaw shortens spring life here

A spring that looks fine in November can be weeks from snapping by February. Every swing from single-digit cold to above-freezing warmth makes the steel coil contract and expand, and that movement drives metal fatigue, the gradual weakening of spring steel under repeated stress.

Milwaukee sees a long run of below-freezing days and can swing thirty degrees inside a single March week; the National Weather Service Milwaukee office keeps the local climate record. That is a repetitive load cycle on a coiled steel component, on top of the four daily cycles the door already runs. Springs here reach end of life sooner than identical springs in a milder climate.

We factor that into the cycle-life rating we recommend, particularly in Brookfield, New Berlin and West Allis where open suburban lots leave garages fully exposed to wind. More in how Wisconsin winters accelerate spring wear.

Field note

Nehoray Karadi

Owner, DiamondLift. What a spring call looks like on arrival.

  • What the customer heardA bang like a gunshot
  • What the door doesHangs crooked or drops on one side
  • The openerHums, motor runs, nothing moves
  • First stepIdentify torsion or extension
  • ThenWeigh the door, panel by panel
  • ThenMatch wire, length and inside diameter

What I see when I pull up to a spring call

Every spring failure tells a story, if you know where to look.

The call usually comes in after a loud bang. Homeowners describe it as a gunshot from inside the garage. The door hangs crooked or drops fast on one side. The opener hums, the motor runs, and nothing moves. That is a classic torsion failure, and it is exactly what the 24/7 line exists for.

When I arrive I start by identifying the system, because torsion above the door and extension along the tracks need different approaches and different safety handling.

The sizing is where I spend real time. I weigh the door panel by panel with a hanging scale, check the door height, and read the existing spring's wire diameter and inside diameter. Then I select a spring matched to all of it, with a cycle-life rating that suits how the household actually uses the door.

Customers often ask whether they can get by replacing one spring when two are installed. When one fails, the other is usually close behind. Replacing both on the same visit is the cheaper call over the life of the door.

Our spring repair standards

Every spring meets a specific weight, height and cycle specification, not a one-size catalogue pick.

  • Selected by measured door weight

Weighed on site, not estimated from the look of the door.

  • Cycle-life rating matched to usage

Chosen against how the household actually runs the door, and against a Milwaukee winter.

  • Safety cables on every extension system

Installed or inspected on all extension spring work, as standard. See safety cable installation.

  • Shaft, drums and cables checked

Before and after installation, because a spring failure often takes the drum alignment with it.

  • Both springs replaced on a worn pair

When a paired set shows near-equal wear, both go. One new spring against one tired one is a second call waiting.

  • Full counterbalance verified

Springs, cables and drums tested together after the repair, and the surrounding hardware inspected in the same visit.

How a spring call runs

Identify the system, size the spring, then prove the door balances.

  1. On arrival

    Diagnostics

A visual and mechanical inspection of the whole counterbalance system. We identify the spring type, check the cables, drums and the door's balance point, and weigh the door when panel-by-panel data is not on the manufacturer's label.

  2. The repair

    Sizing, then winding

Sizing happens before any winding begins: wire diameter, coil length and inside diameter matched to the measured weight and height. Torsion springs are wound to calibrated tension with steel winding bars, never improvised tools. On extension systems, safety cable routing is verified before load is applied.

  3. Before we leave

    Post-service testing

A full open-and-close cycle test, with balance checked at mid-travel: a properly balanced door holds position without drifting. Opener force limits are re-tested and the safety sensor reverse is confirmed. You watch it work before the job is called done.

Spring repair questions, answered

What people ask after the bang.

It depends on the spring type, the door's measured weight and the cycle-life rating you choose, and on whether one spring or a paired set is being replaced. We weigh the door on site before selecting anything, and that measurement drives the part cost. Call (248) 982-5399 and we give you the figure for your door and system.

Most finish in one to two hours on site. Both torsion and extension spring inventory rides on the service vehicles, so there is no wait on a parts order. The job includes a full counterbalance system check and a cycle test before the technician leaves.

Yes, when a paired set shows near-equal wear. If one spring breaks, the other has taken the same stress cycles, so replacing only the snapped one often means a second failure within months. Replacing both on the same visit is the cheaper decision over the life of the door.

We weigh the door on site before selecting a spring, rather than pulling one from inventory on a visual guess. Wire diameter, coil length and inside diameter are matched to the measured weight, which reduces the chance of a mismatched spring wearing out ahead of schedule.

Usually, yes. Parts are stocked on the service vehicles and the emergency line runs 24/7, Sundays and nights included, so a spring that fails on a Monday morning does not have to mean the car is blocked until Tuesday. If your door needs a size that is not on board, you are told on the first call.

No. Do not operate the door. Without a working counterbalance the door's full weight transfers to the lifting hardware and to your hands, and a standard residential door weighs a few hundred pounds. Leave the door where it is and call; the line is answered around the clock.
