How to check in ten seconds, from where you are standing

Open the garage and look along the horizontal tracks running back from the door, near the ceiling. If you see a spring on each side, you have an extension system. Now look for a thin steel cable running through the middle of each spring and bolted to something solid at both ends. If there is nothing running through them, the system has no containment, and the door should stay closed until it does.

Why this small part matters more than it looks

The cable is the cheapest component on the door and the only one whose entire purpose is what happens in the two seconds after something fails.

An extension spring stores energy by stretching

The difference from torsion: a torsion spring sits on a shaft that holds it. An extension spring sits along the track with nothing around it.

That is the whole reason containment exists for one type and not the other. When an extension spring fractures under tension, the stored energy releases along the axis it was stretched on, and the broken lengths travel. There is no shaft to keep them in place and no housing around them.

Without containment, the pieces go somewhere

The scenario: a spring at the end of its cycle life, on a cold morning, with a car underneath.

Springs do not choose convenient moments. They fail when the steel is most brittle and the load is highest, which in this climate means winter mornings. A broken extension spring with nothing threaded through it releases along the track line, into the space the car and the people occupy.

This is the failure mode the cable exists for, and it is the reason we do not quote it as an optional extra on spring work.

Older Milwaukee garages often have none

Where we find gaps: pre-1970s detached garages, and any system where a past repair removed the cables and never put them back.

Containment cables became standard practice on extension systems long after a lot of this city's garages were built. On top of that, cables get cut during a spring replacement and occasionally never re-threaded, so a system that had them in 1998 may not have them now.

We check for them on every spring visit as a matter of course, and we fit them where they are missing rather than writing it up as a separate recommendation for later.

Why safety cables are not a line item on my quotes

It is the cheapest part on the door and the only one whose job is what happens after something goes wrong.

Every extension system my crew touches gets checked for cables. Not because a customer asked, and not because it adds to the invoice. It takes about an hour to fit a pair, the materials cost very little, and the failure it prevents is the kind nobody gets to undo.

What I find as often as missing cables is cables that are technically there and functionally useless. Frayed at the anchor. Threaded but bolted into wood that has worked loose over twenty winters. A cable that is not anchored properly does nothing at the exact moment it is supposed to do everything.

So we check condition and anchoring, not just presence. If a cable is there and sound, we say so and move on. If it is not, we deal with it while we are standing there, which is cheaper for the homeowner than a second visit and better than a note on a report.

  • Threaded through the coil

    Through the centre of the spring, not run alongside it. Alongside contains nothing.

  • Anchored at both ends

    To fixed structural points, checked for pull-out resistance rather than assumed sound.

  • Condition checked, not just presence

    Fraying, kinks and corrosion at the anchor are the common failures on cables that are already fitted.

  • Springs assessed at the same time

    A cable on a spring that is about to fail is doing its job, but you would rather know first.

  • Fitted, not recommended

    Where they are missing and we are already on site, they go in as part of the job.

  • Balance tested afterwards

    The door is cycled and checked at mid-height before we leave, same as any spring visit.

How the visit runs

    Inspection

    We confirm the system is extension rather than torsion, check both springs for fatigue and stretch, look at the pulleys and lift cables, and examine the anchor points at each end for condition and framing soundness. If the springs themselves are near the end of their life, you hear that now, before the cable work starts.

  2. The work

    Threaded and anchored

    A steel cable runs through the centre of each spring and is secured to a fixed anchor point at both ends. Where framing has softened or a fastener has worked loose, the anchor is re-established into solid material rather than driven back into the same hole. Frayed existing cables are replaced rather than reused.

  3. Before we leave

    Balance and cycle test

    The opener is disconnected and the door raised by hand to mid-height, where a balanced door holds without drifting. Then the opener goes back on and the door is cycled with travel, force and safety reversal all confirmed.
