Moving is not the same as safe
A door can open and close smoothly while a frayed cable is three cycles from snapping. Sensors can sit out of alignment and still let the door close, right up until something is in the path.
Auto-reverse, the force reversal system that stops and reverses the door when it contacts an object while closing, has been required on all openers since 1993. Most homeowners have never verified that theirs actually works.

Why these checks matter more here

The older housing stock matters too. Much of it predates 1993, which means some openers predate the federal auto-reverse requirement entirely. If you have moved into an older home and never replaced the opener, that is the first thing to check.

Both take under a minute. Most homeowners have never run either.
Auto-reverse. Lay a flat length of timber on the ground in the door's path and close the door with the button. When the bottom edge makes contact, the door should stop and reverse within two seconds. If it continues, or reverses slowly, the opener's force settings need adjustment. That is straightforward to correct when caught early.
The photo eyes are a separate test. These are the infrared sensors mounted near the floor on both sides of the frame. Wave your hand through the beam while the door is closing; it should reverse immediately. A dirty lens or a small misalignment can disrupt the signal without producing any visible error, which is why sensor alignment tests the beam path rather than the indicator light.

It opened. It closed. It just was not safe
Each check reveals something the previous one does not.
A homeowner in Brown Deer called about a noise she could not describe. Not grinding, not popping, just different from usual. The door opened and closed fine and looked normal.
I started with the balance test: disconnect the opener at the emergency release, the red cord on the trolley, and lift the door to waist height by hand. A balanced door stays put. Hers dropped six inches the moment I let go.
That told me the spring tension was off before I had even looked at the springs. Moving to the spring condition assessment, I found one torsion spring with visible coil separation near the winding cone, which is a near-term failure indicator and needs spring repair.
The cable tension check came next. One lift cable had started to unspool from the drum: a millimetre of slippage that would not have been visible without taking the door off the motor and checking by hand. Nothing about the door's daily movement suggested any of it.
What shapes what a check finds
A door serviced regularly has a different risk profile from one that has run thousands of cycles without lubrication with Wisconsin winters in between.
Opener age
Units installed before 1993 may predate the auto-reverse requirement entirely, which changes what checkpoint one is even testing for.
Spring type and load
Torsion systems on double-car doors carry considerably more tension than extension systems, and the impact of a failure differs accordingly.
Garage temperature range
Unheated spaces accelerate metal fatigue and seal compression faster than a climate-controlled garage does.
Door weight and insulation
Heavier insulated doors put more load on cables and springs, and an insulated double-car door can weigh a couple of hundred pounds. That changes what balanced looks like.
How often it runs
