Metal gets weaker when it gets cold. That is the short version, and it matters every Wisconsin winter.
A torsion spring, the coiled steel bar mounted horizontally above your door, works by storing and releasing tension on every open-close cycle. At room temperature it is flexible: it bends and returns, thousands of times over its life.
Drop that same spring to zero degrees and it behaves like a rubber band left in a cold car overnight. Stiff. Less flexible. Snap it fast and it cracks instead of stretching. The spring does the same thing, just more slowly and less visibly.
A spring tensioned at forty-five degrees in October carries a different mechanical load at five degrees in January. The door feels heavier, the opener strains, and the spring has burned through more of its service life than the calendar suggests. See spring repair.
Most people think of spring failure as a cold-weather event. The truth is slightly different. Temperatures here cross the freezing threshold in both directions repeatedly through a season, sometimes twice inside a day, and each crossing contracts and then re-expands the coil. The National Weather Service Milwaukee office keeps the local record if you want to see the pattern.
January and February are not just the coldest months. They are the months when springs that have already absorbed a full autumn of use finally reach their breaking point. See how freeze-thaw damages the whole system.
Brown Deer, Oconomowoc and the Waukesha corridor all sit where overnight lows regularly dip into single digits. That is not an occasional event here; it is a predictable pattern, and the autumn maintenance window exists because of it.

Cold-weather spring failure is not one process. It is three, running together, and only one of them is visible.
Steel loses structural strength after repeated stress cycles, and it becomes more brittle as temperature drops. Microscopic cracks that form during normal operation propagate faster in cold conditions.
You cannot see this from the garage floor.
The coil physically shortens as temperature falls. Fractions of an inch, but on a tensioned coil that changes the load delivered to the cable drum. The door goes slightly out of balance, the opener pulls harder, the cables take more stress.
This is why the door feels heavier in January with nothing visibly changed.
The end fitting through which tension is applied is a separate failure point. Road salt gets tracked into garages and lands on the lowest surfaces, and a corroded or stress-fractured cone can fail on a spring whose coil still has cycle life left.
The failure mode that surprises people most.
The assembly is interconnected. Spring coil, torsion bar, winding cones, bearing plates and cable drums all move together, so when one element shifts under contraction the others compensate, and that compensation adds wear across the whole thing. See torsion spring systems.
Every spring carries a cycle life rating: the manufacturer's estimate of total open-close cycles before end of life. Standard residential springs are typically rated for around 10,000 cycles, and high-cycle springs for considerably more.
A household running the door four times a day reaches 10,000 cycles in roughly seven years. Cold-weather operation compresses that timeline. The spring does not fail at exactly 10,000, but it becomes significantly more likely to fail as it approaches that number under thermal stress.
When that moment arrives, a snapped spring gets replaced on the same visit rather than leaving a car trapped.
How a spring behaves in winter usually tells you what was happening before it failed.
Four degrees out. The opener runs, strains, and the door barely moves. Sometimes that is the opener labouring against a heavier load from coil contraction. Sometimes the spring snapped silently overnight and the door is dead weight. A torsion spring often goes at the first use of a cold morning, when the coil is at maximum brittleness and the load is highest.
Over several weeks in November and December the door becomes harder to lift by hand, the opener seems slower, and there is a new grinding noise at the top of travel. Classic late-stage cycle depletion compounded by contraction. Not broken yet, but operating at the edge of its rated capacity.
The door does not sit level when closed; one side hangs slightly lower. That usually means one spring on a two-spring system has degraded faster than the other, and cold exaggerates the difference because contraction is not uniform between springs of different ages or wear.

The spring that failed was not random bad luck.
When we arrive on a cold January morning, nine out of ten spring calls follow the same shape. The spring had been running near the end of its cycle life, and freeze-thaw cycling pushed it over the edge.
What working this season has taught me is that the sizing process matters enormously. A spring sized purely for door weight at room temperature works harder than it should once the temperature drops below ten degrees. When we replace a spring we factor in the operating temperature range here, not just what the door weighs on a comfortable day.
We also carry springs in multiple sizes on every vehicle. In January that is not a perk, it is a necessity. A family in West Allis cannot leave their car trapped in the garage while we wait on parts, so the inventory process was built around that.
The other thing I tell every homeowner: if your door is more than five years old and the springs have never been inspected, October is your window. Not December. October.
