Winters here do not break garage doors with cold alone. It is the back and forth: nineteen degrees overnight, thirty-seven by afternoon, then back down. Five failure modes come out of that, each with its own tell.

Cities farther inland tend to get cold and stay cold. Here the lake moderates swings in both directions, which sounds like a benefit but means temperatures sit near the freezing point more often than they stay deeply below it. The NOAA temperature record shows the local pattern.
A seal that freezes solid and stays frozen for two weeks faces one bonding event. A seal that freezes and thaws every day and a half faces thirty or forty in the same period. Each one is a chance for the seal to tear, the panel to flex or the cable tension to shift slightly.

Each has a specific cause, and knowing which one you are dealing with matters. Most people do not connect the dots until something stops working.
The first four each add a small amount of load. The fifth is what happens when they add up.
The rubber strip along the base sits in direct contact with the floor. Moisture that collected during the afternoon thaw freezes overnight and bonds the seal to the concrete. Forcing the door then tears the seal and can buckle the lower panel.
The sign: the opener runs but the door does not move, or it rises with a sharp pop and stops an inch off the floor. It is a morning problem and will not show up in the afternoon. See seal and weather stripping replacement.
Standard lubricants work well at fifty degrees. Below twenty, many of them thicken considerably, and thick lubricant creates friction instead of reducing it. Rollers drag, and the motor compensates by working harder.
The sign: a door that opened smoothly in October starts grinding or moving in short jerky spurts by February. Low-temperature lubricant, formulated to stay fluid through the local range, prevents it.
Tracks are built with intentional spacing between sections so they can expand and contract. In extreme cold the steel contracts and those gaps widen. Rollers bump through the wider gaps, adding vibration and uneven load to the brackets.
The sign: the door is noticeably noisier in January than it was in November. Nothing is broken; the track geometry has shifted enough to be audible. Left alone the repeated impact loosens the bracket fasteners.
Steel lift cables shorten slightly in sustained cold. It is not dramatic but it is measurable, and if tension was set at room temperature and one cable contracts faster than the other, the door develops uneven tension.
The sign: a door balanced correctly in summer pulls left or right in February with nothing else changed. That imbalance stresses the spring system and can pull the door off its track.
Each of the four above adds a small amount of load. Combined, they can push the opener past its thermal protection threshold, which trips an automatic shutoff.
The sign: the opener appears dead, the remote stops working, the door will not move. The motor is usually fine; it shut off to protect itself. This is the most common freeze-related emergency call we get.
When the door will not lift on a cold morning, the instinct is to hold the button down. Fifteen seconds of motor torque against a bonded seal is what tears it.
Break the bond manually first. Pour warm water, not hot, along the base of the door. Give it about a minute. Then use the opener.
That one habit prevents most winter seal replacements. If the seal has already torn or the panel has started to buckle from repeated freeze bonds, that is a different conversation.
Run through these before temperatures start crossing freezing regularly, which here means October into early November.
Replace standard lubricant with a low-temperature formula on rollers, hinges and spring coils.
Check for cracks, stiffness, or sections that have separated from the door panel.
Confirm both lift cables carry equal tension. This is a visual check a technician can do in minutes.
Look for loose bolts at the floor-level bracket where the track curves.
Test the manual reverse. If it takes extra effort to stop the door by hand, the force setting may want adjusting before winter.

Across the service area, these three repeat.
Seven in the morning. The opener hums, the door strains, then the bottom tears away from the floor with a snap. Sometimes the seal comes with it; sometimes the lower panel flexes and cracks. The overnight freeze bonded the seal to the concrete, and motor torque was not the right fix.
The door moves slower for two weeks, then one morning stops halfway up. The opener light blinks and the remote stops responding. Nothing physically broke: the motor hit its load limit and tripped thermal protection. The door has to be released manually to get the car out, and the fix means finding which combination of friction sources pushed it over.
A new metallic bump every time the door passes the same point, starting after a cold snap and louder when it is colder. Track gap widening is the likely cause, with the roller hitting the gap edge on each pass. Left alone it loosens the brackets. Caught early it is a track adjustment and a fastener check.

Here is the counterintuitive part: the homeowners who call me with the most serious winter problems usually have doors that worked fine all autumn. The first ten temperature crossings do not do much. By the thirtieth, the motor is straining, the seal is tearing a little more each morning, and the tracks are loose enough to affect roller travel.

Some freeze-thaw effects are manageable on your own. A warm-water soak to release a frozen seal, a can of low-temperature lubricant on the rollers. Those are reasonable first steps.
A door that will not open in cold weather is usually a system-level issue rather than one broken part. Someone who checks seal condition, cable tension, lubricant state and motor load on the same visit finds the actual cause rather than the symptom that showed up first.
