Home/Spring repair/Spring replacement

Garage door spring replacement

Sized to the door, rated to your usage. Springs wear out on a schedule you can predict, and replacing before the break is easier to plan than replacing after it.

  • Sized to the door's measured weight
  • Cycle rating chosen from your actual usage
  • Torsion and extension stock on the vehicle

A spring's life is measured in cycles, not years

One cycle is one full open and one full close. Springs are manufactured to a rated cycle count, and how many years that converts to depends entirely on how often the door runs.

A household that uses the garage as its main entrance can burn through a rating in a fraction of the time a twice-a-week household takes. That is why the rating is a decision, not a default. We ask how the door is actually used before recommending one.

Cold shortens the practical life further. Steel contracts, the door is heaviest on the coldest mornings, and a spring already deep into its cycle count is most likely to let go then. More in how Wisconsin winters affect spring lifespan.

The same rated spring on three households: light use stretches the rating over many years, average use fewer, and heavy daily use consumes it fastest The same rated spring, three households Light use, a couple of cycles a day: many years Average use, about four a day: fewer Heavy use, the main way in: fastest of all Bars show years of service, not cycles used. Which is why we ask about usage before recommending a rating.

Signs a spring is near the end

None of these mean the door is unsafe today. All of them mean the spring is telling you something before it snaps.

  • The door feels heavier on the manual release

The clearest early signal. Pull the release and lift by hand: if it takes noticeably more effort than it used to, the spring is losing tension.

  • It opens more slowly than it did

The opener is compensating. A motor working harder to do the same job is usually a counterbalance problem, not a motor problem.

  • It will not hold at mid-height

Disconnect the opener, raise the door halfway and let go. A balanced door stays put. One that drifts down or springs up has uneven or failing tension.

  • Visible gaps in the coil

On a torsion spring, a gap that was not there before means the steel has started to separate. On extension springs, look for a spring that no longer contracts fully.

  • The door moves unevenly

One side lagging on a paired system points at tension that is no longer matched across the two springs.

  • Age past the rating

If you know roughly when the springs went in and roughly how often the door runs, you can estimate where you are against the rating.

Replacing before the break, or after

The work itself is the same. What changes is when you choose it and what it costs you around the edges.

Planned, before the break

  • Booked into a normal service window
  • Both springs matched and replaced together
  • No car trapped, no morning disrupted
  • Cycle rating chosen without time pressure

The same job, on your schedule.

Reactive, after the snap

  • Usually discovered with the car inside
  • Often an after-hours call
  • The door is unusable until it is fixed
  • Decisions made under pressure

Handled the same visit through snapped spring repair, just less convenient.

Field note

Nehoray Karadi

Owner, DiamondLift. A planned replacement in Menomonee Falls.

  • Why they calledDoor felt heavier by hand
  • SpringsOriginal, roughly 12 years
  • Household useMain entrance, heavy
  • Old ratingStandard, well past it
  • FittedHigher cycle rating, matched pair
  • Nothing had brokenAnd nothing did

The call I would rather get

Nothing had broken yet. That is exactly why it was a good call.

A homeowner in Menomonee Falls noticed the door felt heavier when she pulled the manual release. Nothing dramatic, no noise, no visible damage. She called to ask whether it was worth looking at.

The springs were original to the house, roughly twelve years old, on a garage the family used as their main way in and out. That is heavy cycling, and those springs were well past what their rating was built for. They had not failed. They were going to.

We fitted a matched pair at a higher cycle rating, because for that household the extra up front buys real years at the other end. I explained the arithmetic and let her decide; she took the higher rating.

No car was trapped. No morning was ruined. She picked the time. That is the version of this job I would rather do, and it is the same work either way, which is the whole point of the spring repair conversation.

Our replacement standards

Planned or reactive, the specification is identical.

  • Door weighed before selection

Measured on site, not estimated from the door's width or look.

  • Cycle rating discussed, not assumed

We ask how the door is used and tell you the trade-off in plain terms before you choose.

  • Matched pairs on paired systems

Both springs, same size and rating, so tension stays even across the door.

  • Correct system, correct method

Torsion wound with calibrated bars to the right turn count; extension fitted with safety cables threaded and anchored.

  • Hardware inspected in the same visit

Cable drums, bearings, pulleys and lift cables checked, because a worn part shortens a new spring's life.

  • Balance proved before we leave

Held at mid-height by hand, then cycled under power with travel, force and reversal all confirmed.

How the replacement runs

Measure, choose the rating together, fit and prove it.

  1. On arrival

    Measure and assess

Door weight established on site, spring type and existing size read off the current set, and the surrounding hardware inspected: drums, bearings, cables and pulleys. We also ask how often the door runs, because that is the input for the cycle rating.

  2. The choice

Rating decided with you, not for you

You get the trade-off in plain terms: what a standard rating means for your usage, what a higher one costs and roughly what it buys. Then the springs come off the vehicle and go on, matched as a pair on a paired system.

  3. Before we leave

    Balance and safety test

The opener is disconnected and the door raised by hand to mid-height, where a correctly balanced door holds without drifting. Then the opener goes back on, the door is cycled, and travel limits, force settings and safety reversal are all confirmed.

Spring replacement questions, answered

What people ask when nothing has broken yet.

It depends on the spring type, the door's measured weight and the cycle rating you choose, and on whether one spring or a matched pair is going in. A higher-cycle spring costs more up front and lasts longer. Call (248) 982-5399 with the door size and we give you the figure for your system.

Most take one to two hours from arrival, including the balance test. Both torsion and extension springs ride on the service vehicles, so there is no wait on a parts order and the job finishes in one visit.

On a paired system, yes. Both springs have carried the same load through the same cycle count, so the survivor is usually inside the same wear window. Replacing one leaves uneven tension across the door and typically brings a second call within months.

It depends on how often the door runs. A household using the garage as its main entrance cycles the door far more than one that opens it twice a week. We ask about your usage and recommend a rating on that basis, and we tell you the expected service life so you can weigh the up-front difference honestly.

No. A wound torsion spring stores a large amount of energy and releasing it without the correct winding bars causes serious injuries. Extension springs under tension are equally dangerous when they let go. This is one of the few household repairs where the tooling and the training are the whole job.

A correctly sized spring handles cold fine, but the cold itself shortens spring life over the years because steel contracts and the door is heaviest on the coldest mornings. That is why we factor local conditions into the cycle rating we recommend rather than picking from a size chart alone.
