A door that worked in December can throw false sensor errors in March, because metal tracks contract and expand at a different rate from the concrete below them. Spring humidity adds a second layer. Wood and wood-composite sections absorb moisture and gain weight, and that extra load throws off the relationship between spring tension and door weight. An imbalanced door triggers overload codes on the control board, which looks exactly like a motor failure and is not one.

The control board told me everything I needed in about ninety seconds.
The call came from a homeowner in New Berlin. Opener humming, door not moving. His first guess was the motor, and his neighbour had told him to replace the whole unit.
I started where I always start: the fault code off the opener's control board. The code pointed to a travel limit error, not a motor overload. A travel limit switch is the internal setting telling the motor how far to open and close. When it drifts, the motor thinks it is already at the end of its range, so it hums, holds position and goes nowhere.
That is not a dead motor. That is a calibration issue.
I reset and recalibrated the limit switch, ran a full open-close cycle to confirm it tracked, then checked the mechanical load balance with the opener disconnected: manual pull, midpoint release, measured drift. Spring tension was in range. The door ran perfectly, nothing was replaced, and no opener was swapped out. Without that first step he could have paid for a replacement that fixed nothing. Each phase has a purpose and none is skipped. The fourth step is not another test; it is where you find out what the first three added up to.
We start at the control board. Most major opener brands store fault codes, numeric or flashing-light, that identify a specific failure mode: sensor obstruction, motor overload, travel limit error. We read the code, match it to the failure mode and record the result before touching anything mechanical.
Then the opener comes off and the door is tested by hand. A properly balanced door stays put when released at midpoint rather than drifting up or dropping down. Drift means spring tension is off, and we measure how much and in which direction. See balancing.
Photo eye sensors tested for alignment and signal strength, not just clean lenses. Then the safety reversal is triggered deliberately, once with a physical object and once with a blocked beam, and confirmed correct both times.
