Track alignment is repositioning and resecuring the steel rails that guide the door from floor to ceiling. It is the right call when the door scrapes, slows or wobbles on the way up or down.
The door might still open. It might close most of the way. But there is a scraping sound on one side, or it hesitates at the same spot every time, or the track gap, the clearance between the roller stem and the inner face of the rail, looks wider than it should.
That is a track problem, not a worn roller problem. When a rail shifts even a fraction of an inch, every roller passing through that section carries extra load. The door binds, the opener strains, and panel edges wear. If the door has already jumped the rail, off-track repair comes before any alignment work.
Each zone fails differently and each produces its own symptom. A door can have problems in all three at once, which is exactly what makes single-point fixes unreliable.
The upright portion that guides the panels off the floor. Most affected by bracket drift, and when it loses plumb the door runs harder on one side. Rollers there wear faster and hinges take more lateral stress.
The curved transition between vertical and horizontal, and the highest-stress point in the system. A slight inward bow makes rollers accelerate unevenly through it, which is why scraping is often worse on closing than opening.
The ceiling-mounted section that supports the door fully open. A loose lag point into a joist lets the mid-span sag, and the door starts running uphill toward the opener, which strains the motor over time.
Correcting the visible zone leaves the others loaded, and loaded drift points fail within a season.

Track problems here are rarely one event. The steel track expands and contracts with temperature, and so do the wall studs the mounting brackets are bolted into. Repeat that cycle dozens of times between October and March and the fasteners loosen incrementally.

Older construction west of downtown, including a lot of the 1960s and 1970s ranch homes in West Allis and New Berlin, often has framing with fewer blocking points for bracket anchors, so the fasteners depend on less wood and loosen sooner. Catching all three is what makes the repair last.
The homeowner called about a scraping sound during closing. It looked like a simple bracket issue: the vertical track was visibly kicked inward about a quarter inch near the bottom. That is a one-bolt fix if you stop there.
I ran the measurements at the vertical section and the bracket had indeed loosened, with the track face sitting too close to the panel. But I also checked the radius curve, and it had developed a slight inward bow. Not dramatic, but enough that rollers were accelerating through it unevenly, which is why the scraping was worse on closing than opening.
Third point: the horizontal section had a sagging mid-span from a loose lag into the ceiling joist. The door was running uphill toward the opener, which strains the motor over time.
We corrected all three. Re-anchored the brackets with larger-diameter hardware, following DASMA guidance on track plumb and bracket installation, realigned the curve by hand, re-tensioned the horizontal run and confirmed the door ran level overhead. Then re-measured the gap at multiple points. That homeowner had lived with the door for two winters, and correcting only the visible bracket would have held for about one more season.
Track problems show up as symptoms first: sounds, hesitation, a visible gap, a door that feels heavier than it used to. "My door sounds wrong" is a complete description as far as we are concerned.
You do not need to work out whether it is the vertical section, the curve or the horizontal run. What matters is that someone measures all three before touching the hardware. We confirm the full track plane, identify every point of drift, and explain what we found before any adjustment starts.
If the symptom turns out not to be the track at all, you hear that too. Several faults produce a door that hesitates or stops part-way, which is why the will-not-close diagnostic runs a sequence rather than assuming.

A full visual run of both tracks from floor to ceiling, checking for visible gaps, bent sections and loose brackets before any measuring starts. Then the gap at six points and plumb on both vertical sections. Every deviation is documented, including the small ones that are not causing symptoms yet.
Bracket re-anchoring comes first, because loose hardware means no adjustment holds. Then the track face is repositioned to restore correct clearance at each zone. Bent sections are straightened in place where that is sound; sections with a permanent kink are replaced and cut to fit on site. The curve is realigned and the horizontal run levelled and re-tensioned at every lag point.
The door runs five full cycles while we listen for scraping and watch for hesitation, then we re-measure the gap at the same six points. Roller movement should be smooth through the whole arc. Where misalignment has been running long enough that rollers on the affected side show accelerated wear, we flag roller replacement rather than leaving worn rollers on a corrected track.

Because correcting only the visible gap leaves the other drift points loaded, and those fail within a season. The radius curve, where vertical meets horizontal, takes the most mechanical stress in the system. A bow there means rollers still accelerate unevenly after the repair, so the door sounds better for a few months and then does not.
Usually, yes. Scraping during travel is one of the clearest signs of a track out of plumb: the vertical section has drifted and rollers on that side are grinding rather than rolling. Alignment corrects the track face position and re-anchors the bracket, and the scraping stops because the roller is no longer forced into the rail wall.
Visual inspection misses the deviations that cause most of the wear. A quarter-inch gap error is not visible from the floor, plumb is checked with a level rather than by eye, and bracket torque needs a tool. The damage those small errors do to rollers and hinges accumulates for months before it becomes obvious.
