Single or double torsion, decided by the door's measured weight and the header clearance above it, not by what happened to be installed when the house was built.
It is a spring assembly on a steel shaft directly above the opening that uses torque, rotational force, to lift and lower the door. The spring unwinds, the shaft turns, the cable drums at each end wind the lift cables, and the cables pull the door up.
The spring is not lifting your door by stretching. It is lifting it by twisting. That distinction matters for sizing: a spring wound to the wrong tension for the door's actual weight will either overwork the opener or fail early.
For most residential doors that cycle runs somewhere between 1,500 and 2,000 times a year. If the configuration on your door has not been established yet, start at spring repair.

A single spring carries the whole load. Two springs on the same shaft split it, so each one lasts longer, and if one fails the door still has partial support. Which one you get depends on measured weight and the space above the opening.
A correctly sized single beats an unnecessary double every time.
Common on heavier insulated and two-car doors, and only recommended when the weight and clearance justify it.

Single springs on heavy insulated doors are the most common mismatch I find.
The homeowner said the opener had been grinding for a few months and the door felt heavy on the manual release. It was a 16-foot insulated steel double-car door, and there was easily twelve inches of header clearance, the vertical space between the top of the frame and the ceiling. Plenty of room for a double setup.
The door had been on a single spring since the house was built, and that spring was undersized for the weight. Not by a massive margin, but enough that the opener motor had been compensating for years. The spring had not snapped, but the winding cones showed stress and the wire had a slight set to it, meaning it had permanently deformed from overloading. When one does go all the way, snapped spring repair handles it on the same visit.
We installed a double setup, two springs on the same shaft wound in opposite directions: left-wound on the left, right-wound on the right. Wind direction has to match position on the shaft or the system works against itself.
The door balanced at the halfway mark afterwards and the opener barely made a sound. The homeowner said it felt like a brand new system, which it essentially was.
We measure or estimate door weight on every diagnostic visit. Heavier insulated doors, two-car models especially, often benefit from a double configuration even where a single spring came with the house. After installation, balancing verifies the tension and confirms the load is spread evenly.
Header clearance decides whether a double setup is physically possible. Most homes here built after the 1980s have enough. Older low-ceiling garages sometimes do not, and in those cases we work with extension springs or a compact torsion alternative rather than forcing a configuration that will not fit. Width, height and an estimated weight from the material and insulation type. Header clearance checked to confirm single or double. The existing shaft, cable drums and winding cones inspected for wear, and the opener checked to see whether it has been compensating for a spring problem.
Springs selected, wound to the correct tension with proper winding bars and mounted to the shaft. On a double setup the left-wound spring goes left of the shaft centre and the right-wound goes right. Safety cables thread through both springs before tensioning begins, and the cable drums are re-tensioned to match.
The opener is disconnected and the door raised by hand to the halfway mark. A properly balanced door holds there without rising or falling. Then the opener is reconnected, five full cycles run, and we listen for grinding, uneven movement or cable slack. Sensor alignment is confirmed before we leave.
Garages here cycle through extreme swings: an unheated garage can sit below zero in January and run past ninety in July. Steel contracts in cold, so a spring calibrated at room temperature is under extra stress on a January morning, exactly when the door is heaviest and the metal is stiffest.
Manufacturers rate springs for a cycle count at a controlled temperature, following DASMA practice, and cold-weather cycling works through that rating faster. We factor it into every selection, which means wire gauge and cycle rating chosen for the conditions rather than whatever matches the door size on a chart. A double setup costs more, because it is two springs, both cable drums re-tensioned and a full balance test. The exact figure depends on the door's weight and the condition of the existing hardware. Both options are assessed on the diagnostic visit so you see the difference before any work starts, and on a heavy insulated door the extra usually comes back through longer spring life and less strain on the opener.
Most torsion jobs finish in two to three hours from arrival. Measuring the door, checking header clearance and inspecting the shaft takes roughly thirty minutes, installation and winding follow, and the balance test adds another fifteen to twenty. A double setup on a heavy two-car door can run slightly longer, and completion on the same visit is normal.
Only when the measured weight and available header clearance justify it. Single-spring setups work correctly on lighter single-car doors. We measure the door first and present both options with the reason behind the recommendation. Some low-ceiling garages here physically cannot take a double setup, and those get a correctly sized single spring instead.
