What an insulated double-car door does for the house

A double-car door, typically 16 feet across, is the largest surface on the house that faces a Wisconsin winter. Without insulation it acts as a heat sink. How I handle an insulated double-car door from start to finish

Every insulated two-car door starts with weight confirmation, not an assumption.

I got a call last winter from a homeowner in New Berlin. A 16-foot opening, an attached garage under a finished bedroom, and the single-layer steel door the house was built with. Her heating bills had climbed every year for three winters. She assumed the furnace was getting old.

The door was a non-insulated single-skin panel, no foam core, an R-value of effectively zero. The bedroom above was losing heat through the floor all night. That was not a furnace problem. That was a door problem.

For her opening and that attached-garage situation I recommended a polyurethane-core door, the denser option that bonds to the steel skin and reaches R-16 to R-18 in a residential panel. Here is the part that matters on a double-car door: insulated panels are heavy. A 16-foot polyurethane-core door can run 150 to 200 pounds or more depending on thickness and gauge, and that weight needs a torsion spring system sized for it, chosen from the door's actual weight, height and expected cycle count.

Can I keep my existing opener?
