The memory gets wiped before anything new is added, so there is nothing left in the queue you cannot account for. Programming a remote is not just adding a button; it is deciding who still has access.
Rolling code technology, which generates a new access code on every single use, is standard on most modern openers. It is genuinely good security. But it only protects the devices in the list, and the list does not clear itself.
A previous owner's remote keeps working until someone physically clears the opener's memory, using the learn button on the motor unit. Until that happens, every device ever paired to that opener can still open it: previous owners, contractors, family members, anyone who was ever handed one.
Milwaukee's older neighbourhoods, Bay View, Riverwest and much of the south side, have a lot of homes built between the 1980s and the early 2000s. Plenty of those openers have passed from owner to owner, collecting unknown devices along the way. If a door has been opening on its own, this is one of the first things to rule out.

The symptoms look identical. The fixes are completely different.
A homeowner in West Allis had just moved in and bought two universal remotes from a hardware store. Neither worked, so she called thinking the opener had failed.
When I arrived I checked the opener model first, which I do before touching a remote. It was an older fixed-frequency unit, made before rolling code became standard, and the remotes she had bought were designed for modern rolling-code systems. Frequency compatibility was the entire problem.
I pulled a compatible remote from the vehicle, ran the learn button and had her programmed in under ten minutes. Then I checked the keypad she had also bought: same mismatch. Swapped it, set her PIN, tested both three times.
She told me she had spent two hours watching videos before calling. A dead battery, a frequency mismatch and a corrupted memory all look the same from the driveway, which is why I run the diagnostic before I touch a button. You do not want to spend an afternoon solving the wrong problem. Where the opener genuinely is the fault, that is opener repair.
None of them mean the opener has failed. All three produce a remote that does nothing when you press it.
When someone has already tried programming their own remote, we start from the diagnostic rather than from where they left off. Picking up mid-sequence is how a second visit happens.
The cheapest possible cause and the easiest to rule out, which is exactly why it gets ruled out first rather than last.
The remote and the opener are talking on different bands. Common after buying a universal remote for an older unit, and no amount of programming will fix it.
The learn button will not accept a new device, or accepts it and drops another. Looks like a broken remote, is actually a full or scrambled device list.
Confirm the opener model, verify frequency compatibility, check the learn button responds, then clear the memory before pairing anything new. Run in that order it catches the real problem the first time.
All three are handled in a single trip. The difference is how much of the memory gets touched.
The learn button goes into learning mode, the new remote is registered and the signal is tested. If the memory is otherwise clean, no full reset is needed; we confirm what is already stored before deciding.

A numeric code assigned to a wireless keypad mounted outside the garage, so no remote or phone is needed. Mounted if required, paired through the learn sequence, PIN set, then three consecutive entries tested.
If the old PIN was set by someone unknown, the clear happens first.
The learn button is held until the memory clears and every stored device is erased, then each device you want is programmed from scratch in the correct sequence.
