How a door comes off its railsCable tension imbalance
Off-track means one or more rollers have left the track channel and the door no longer moves along its intended path. It can cause serious secondary damage in seconds, and it is almost never the real fault.
Something pushed the roller out. A bent track section calls for track repair. A failed roller bearing calls for roller replacement. Cable tension imbalance, one lift cable looser than the other, pulls the door unevenly toward the track edge until a roller pops out. Reset the door without fixing that, and you are back in the same position by next week.

A roller derailment looks simple. Finding the real cause is where the work starts.
A homeowner in West Allis called: her door had come off track on the left side, sitting at an angle, and the opener ground every time she ran it. She had hit the button twice before calling.
The left cable had gone slack. That side of the door traveled slower than the other until the roller was dragged to the edge of the channel and popped out. The door sitting crooked then pulled two more rollers toward the edge on the second run. Cable repair addresses exactly that slack at the root.
On arrival: three rollers out of channel, one horizontal track section bent at the curve, and the left bracket loose at the top of the vertical track, its fasteners partly pulled from the framing. She thought it was a "door off track" fix. It was four separate issues from one slack cable. We re-seated every roller, straightened the bent section with a track-forming tool, re-fastened the bracket into solid framing, reset cable tension on both sides and ran a full travel test. Smooth.
Not every off-track job is that involved. Some are one roller, ten minutes, done. But you do not know which one you have until someone who knows what to look for has looked. That is why our process always includes cause identification, not reset and leave.
A large share of the city's housing stock went up between the 1940s and 1970s, and many of those detached garages have wood framing that has been through decades of freeze-thaw: hard winters, wet spring thaws, repeated expansion and contraction. That works the track bracket fasteners loose over time. By the time a roller derails, the bracket often was not anchored firmly to begin with.
Same repair, different stakes. When we arrive we are not just resetting the door; we are checking whether the wall framing behind the bracket is still solid enough to hold, and track alignment addresses bracket loosening before it causes the next derailment. That matters a lot more in a 1955 Milwaukee garage than in a 2015 Brookfield build.
Doors forced open against ice, common in February and March, often show bracket stress even when the track looks fine. We check fastener condition on every call that comes in after a freeze.

Usually not. It depends on the bent section. If the track bent because a vehicle clipped it or the door was forced while frozen, the deformed section may need replacing; a track kinked past a certain point will not allow smooth roller travel however well the roller is serviced.
If the track is structurally straight and the derailment came from a failed roller bearing, a loose bracket or cable tension loss, the track stays. We straighten minor deformities with forming tools and replace only what genuinely needs replacing.

A full visual and mechanical assessment: where the roller exited the channel, cable tension on both sides, bent sections in the track, and each visible bracket tested for firmness. Eight to twelve minutes, and it tells us exactly what scope we are dealing with.
We disengage the opener and work the door by hand into a safe position. Rollers are re-seated one at a time from the lowest point of derailment upward. Track sections are straightened or replaced. Bracket fasteners are re-driven with the right hardware into solid framing, not back into the same hole if the wood has pulled. Cable tension is equalized and all hinges and hardware torqued before the door goes back on the opener.
